Any minute now, my ship is coming in
I’ll keep checking the horizon
And I’ll check my machine, there’s sure to be that call
It’s gonna happen soon, soon, oh, so very soon
It’s just that times are lean
And you say, be still my love
Open up your heart, let the light shine in
Don’t you understand
Oh, I already have a plan
I’m waiting for my real life to begin
—Colin Hay, “Waiting For My Real Life to Begin”
One problem I have, both professionally and personally, is that I have a tendency to defer joy. I am pretty sure that I am not the only one, either. Like others, I create hurdles that get in the way of doing things that give me satisfaction, fill my cup, recharge my battery. Yes, there are toads that need to be eaten, but we also need to celebrate all accomplishments, no matter how small. We cannot expect people to deliver on the promise 100% of the time, if we don’t let them take a moment to reflect on how far they have come and feel good about themselves and the work. Look at your to-do list. If you don’t see joy in there somewhere, then add it. If you have it, but have too many other things crowding it out, don’t wait for the perfect time. Do it now. Just for once, skip the veggies and go right to dessert.
